Well Drilling Services

Well Drilling

Well drilling uses a large piece of equipment, known as a well drilling rig, to bore down into the earth in order to reach an aquifer or water source deep below the ground. A well drilling company may choose to use either a rotary driller, which bores into the earth using a specialized drill bit, known as a Tri-cone bit. The bit is attached to a hollow metal drill stem, which rotates allowing the bit to cut into the soil or bedrock. High pressure air or drilling fluid is forced down the hollow drill stem to cool and lubricate the bit as well as stabilize the well walls. There is also another drilling method which uses a heavy fluted bit, which is raised and dropped to punch a hole in the soil. Either of these methods are commonly used. Both have their pro’s and con’s however rotatory drilling now dominates the industry as it is fast and can be used in many soil and bedrock conditions.

Requirements for Well Drilling Construction

All well drillers are responsible for constructing wells to comply with the provisions of the Groundwater Protection Regulation (GWPR) related to how a well is constructed. This means that the well driller must ensure that the well meets the minimum standards for casing materials, wellhead completion, the surface seal, well caps and covers, as well as for well identification. Well drillers are also required to submit a well construction report to the province.

Installing a Well Pump

When having a well pump installed, it is important to ensure that your well pump installer:

  • Installed the well pump in a way that complies with the GWPR
  • Maintains or restores the integrity of the surface seal for the well
  • Holds the correct ticket required for wiring the pump to the electrical fittings or will be working with a qualified electrician to complete the job
  • Maintains the casing stick-up above ground
  • Disinfects the well
  • Replaces the well cap and cover when the job is finished
